Another area we spend a lot of time on in our class is pioneering techniques. You don't suppose the early settlers who moved out west for the gold rush days had access to a Home Depot down the street? Of course not. They didn't even have money to spend on nails, let alone triple-pane, gas-filled insulated windows. That would be silly.
We've studied the techniques used by the pioneers, and surprisingly many of these techniques are just as valid today as they were then. We aren't talking about using tanned animal hides for curtains (although that would be an interesting touch to a log home decor). But pioneering techniques are what makes it possible to build a log home today without buying or renting an expensive crane. Lifting the logs while building your log home is one of the easiest parts of building your new log home or log cabin. Even the ridge pole (the log that goes under the peak of the roof) can be lifted by hand with simple tools that will fit in the trunk of a car.
