One of the things we cover in-depth in our two-day log home class is what tools you will need to do the job. Some of the tools we suggest are tools that most people can make themselves for almost nothing. But there will probably be a few things you need to buy (either new or used), such as the standard carpentry tools. You will need a small chainsaw, a carpenter's level, a few hammers and other small hand tools, a set of chisels, and many other easy-to-find items.
Many of the students who take our two-day log home building class ask us for a list of resources for buying tools and other equipment for building log homes and log cabins. So here are some links to various companies that offer tools for log home builders.
One of our all-time favorite tool shops is Lee Valley Tools. We find that they are reputable and offer excellent service. We highly recommend picking up a copy of their catalog because it is so interesting you can use it as a coffee table book after you finish your log home. It works even better if your copy is dog-eared and covered with sawdust when your guests arrive.
Another store that has received good reviews from our students is the Log Home Store. In addition to selling log home, log cabin and woodworking products, they have a variety of articles and a newsletter devoted to working with wood. They have one of those websites that can make you forget the time and miss less important appointments like maybe your wedding.
Bailey's Logging Supply is a good source for all sorts of lumberjack equipment such as chain saws, portable saw mills, protective equipment, etc. They have a very nice online catalog. Their biggest portable saw mills make log home builders drool from 50 feet away.
Schroeder Log Home Supply has a good selection of tools, finishes and other log home accessories.
Always remember to check for tools you need in flea markets, newspapers, eBay, garage sales, etc., because they will be a lot less expensive and in many cases just as good or better than new tools.
